The Sad End of Charlie Crist

Watching the Florida Republican primary from afar has been a fascinating exercise. The sudden fall of Charlie Crist  - from being a seemingly unbeatable candidate with 5 statewide races under his belt and an endless Rolodex of high-dollar donors to political trainwreck - has been noted, well, everywhere, as has the emergence of new Republican rockstar Marco Rubio.

The stars have rarely aligned so well for a candidate (though Marco Rubio’s hard work at the grass roots, his aggressive social networking strategy and his compelling personal narrative have certainly helped) and the Republican primary situation in Florida was literally not imaginable a year ago, it looks more and more inevitable that the long run of Charlie Crist is nearly over. How very different from 2006: Florida looked like another state moving from Red to Purple To Blue.

We were in a post-partisan era, remember?  The future of the GOP was guys like Charlie Crist: moderate, soft around the edges and nice to a fault.  The era of ideology was behind us. Charlie was hailed as a future Vice Presidential pick…maybe even a Presidential contender in 2016.

So what happened?

Beyond the moment of the famous hug, Charlie Crist underestimated the permanent symbolic damage backing the Obama stimulus package would do.  In an age where empowered conservatives dominate the social networks that define the poltical landscape more completely than the friendly press he’s always enjoyed, he was blind and deaf to the damage he caused.  He’s rarely been held accountable before either in a campaign or in government, and now he faces angry Republicans, active Tea Party voters and independents for whom the Obama stimulus is a unmitigated failure…and on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and blogs, they’re holding him responsible for his betrayal of conservative principles.

More baffling, Crist keeps digging in deeper, defending his decision to back the stimulus. These decisions tell me that his mindset is stuck in 2006, when the conventional wisdom predicted that Republican leaders would come from the John McCain-Lindsey Graham wing of the party and that robust conservatism was a thing of the past.

But 2010 is the year where fiscal conservatism made a comeback, and Republican voters are looking for someone to go to Washington and tell Barack Obama and the Democrats, “Enough!” We saw it in New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts, and I think we’re seeing it again in Florida more clearly than in any other primary.

One observer said that because Charlie Crist could win elections in “purple” Florida that GOP voters looked the other way when it came to Crist.  But recent polls show both Crist and Rubio beat Democrat Kendrick Meek.  So if the growing conservative movement (and Republican and independent voters) can have both - ideological strength and a win in the general election - why not go with the one they love?  There’s no need for the bait-and-switch of putting out a nice-guy moderate: the GOP base and Florida independents are leaning strongly to the right this cycle, and Marco fits the bill perfectly.

Charlie has always grabbed and run on a popular issue: crime in the 1990s, education in the 2000s, climate change in 2006 and seemed to be setting himself up as the “I can work with Barack” candidate for 2010…until Obama’s poll numbers came crashing to earth and took Charlie with them.

Conservative ideological intensity — particularly on the fiscal side — is back in style, and there is no more powerful symbol of that this year than whether or not you oppose the Obama agenda.  Crist’s explicit endorsement of one of the three major legs of the Obama agenda - and his initial reluctance to talk straight on his position on health care — cemented his image with Republican voters. Marco Rubio, a man who from the beginning has stuck with his message of fiscal discipline and real conservative principals was the obvious, inevitable counterweight.

A political hermaphrodite, Crist now wants to be a born-again beacon of conservative purity. His campaign is desperate and attacking wildly…nitpicking Rubio’s American Express statements when he should have been talking opposition to Obama. The Governor clearly has very few ideas left and he’s going to throw everything at the wall he can. Will it damage Marco?  Yes, because negatives hurt, especially when echoed by some plainly pro-Crist voices in the Florida media.  Are they enough for Crist to win a primary? Almost certainly not.

No matter how many times he say’s he’s a strong conservative, the current political climate and that iconic picture have permanently and profoundly locked in his image with conservatives. He’s fighting the battle that won’t help the Republican Party or the conservative cause.  The conservatives are gone, and every poll proves it. And conservatives are the ones who come out on Primary Day. An independent campaign will fail, fast and hard as Crist burns through his money with no hope of replacing it. Every dollar spent on Charlie Crist is a dollar to Meek.

Charlie Crist was always a great campaigner, but never a great leader. He can’t understand why there’s no U-turn on the road he took, but unless he decides soon to leave the race with some dignity, what reputation he has left will be squandered as a man who didn’t realize that his time in political life had come…and gone.

Clint Didier scores

I have been watching Clint Didier’s campaign for a while.  He first caught my attention speaking at a candidates forum on January 16th.  He spoke very powerfully, and was on target with his ideas.  His message was raw, and rough around the edges.  He  has been speaking out against what is going on in DC, at Tea parties in Eastern Washington for months.

——-

He is a Pasco Farmer, who has been having to work with the Federal Government.  His business involves having to deal with issues of enviromental regulation, labor laws, and the economic forces of illegal immigration for a long time.  He has literal “on the ground experience’ with the effects of federal enforcement and with the lack thereof.  His company has to earn revenue, pay the bills, respect the market, and listen to customers.  Though lacking in political experience, he has a better view of what the country needs and lacks, than Patty Murray, the Senator he would like to replace.  We all know the Countries Leadership has become blind and deaf.   What better place to start than with a person who uses all five senses, and has to live with the results of his judgement.

I have hesitated to bring forward Clint Didier on RedState because he was missing some crucial components to be successful in politics.  Specifically money, and evidence that he can persuade others.  Two things have happened to change that.  First, on March 4th, he announced he has gained the endorsment of a major Republican political figure in Western Washington.  Kemper Freeman Jr. is the major mover in Bellevue, a large and wealthy city on the opposite side of Lake Washington from Seattle.  It is far more Republican  than Seattle.  He has continued his father’s success in real estate, turning a strip mall into the largest and most successful mall in Washington State (Bellevue Square).  He owns, or has built much of Bellevue.  He is very influential in the WS Republican Party.  Didier has gained a blue chip endorsment and a chairman of his finance committee.

“I see Clint as just the kind of man we need in Washington today,” said Freeman of his endorsement. “He’s a proven champion who isn’t making this effort for any reason except to truly serve the people of this state and bring our runaway government spending under control.”

The Seattle PI wrote this article on Kemper Freeman.

Secondly, I’ve seen Clint Didier improve as a political figure.  He has updated an already first class website, to include give a compelling personal story about why he is running.

Intro Letter

In this time of worry, grief and despair, it is heartening to hear a person speak confident and boldly, about the story of America’s success.  He truly believe’s in the American Dream, has experienced it himself, and would like others to succeed as well.  He has a very powerful voice, a good story, the right ideas, and can speak about them outside of a canned talking point format.  I believe he can persuade Washington voters to take a chance on him this fall.

Lastly, for some, his name may sound familiar.  Yes, he has been inside Washington DC.  He played tight end for the Washington Redskins in two Superbowls; leading in receiving yards in the first Superbowl, catching a touchdown in the second Superbowl.

After returning home from professional football, he coached the local high school team to two state championships.  He is a powerful speaker and motivator to do that.  Check him out at this website

http://www.clintdidier.org/home.html

Republicans have been very competitive in recent years in Washington elections, and can be again.  To break open Washington would send a powerful sign to the region Republicans are back.

Barbara Boxer is in the Fight of her Political Life

Doooooooom! Pt. 2.

On the heels of a Rasmussen poll suggesting Democrats should worry about Senator Barbara Boxer’s re-election chances, comes worse news from Field for the three term incumbent.

The raw numbers: Campbell 44/Boxer 43, Fiorina 44/Boxer 45, DeVore 41/Boxer 45, 3.7% Margin of Error. My model’s win percentages: DeVore 29% , Fiorina 44%, and Campbell 55%.

Chris Widener, Candidate For U.S. Senate, Vetted By “We The People” – A Top-Notch Performance

Yesterday evening, We The People – Southwest Washington held the second in their current series of Candidate Vetting sessions. Once again, I was impressed with what I saw in this process and once again, I was impressed with the candidate being vetted for U.S. Senate, Chris Widener.

Of course, since We The People is a “grassroots” organization, it’s very important for a candidate to connect with the people who make up the group. One thing that helped Widener in doing this was that he was present, earlier in the day, at a We The People rally held outside the Fort Vancouver office of Southwest Washington’s U.S. Congressman, Brian Baird. In addition to the way Widener joined in with the crowd at the rally and his on-point speech at the rally, I had the sense that folks appreciated the effort required for a Seattle-area-based candidate to fully participate in the rally.

As I’ve said before, key qualities that I appreciate about the We The People Candidate Vetting process are its aim to reveal a candidate’s motives for running and how well equipped they are to serve. Based on this vetting session, here’s how Chris Widener seems to measure up against these criteria:

His primary motive for running seems to be his belief that our federal government is continuing to take our nation in the wrong direction, especially in terms of mounting debt and increasing it’s authority over the States. Furthermore, he sees the U.S. Senator he’s running to replace, Patty Murray, as playing a significant role in our sitting government and their direction.

In terms of being equipped to do the job, Widener seems to have the talent and background needed to do an excellent job. Furthermore, he seemed at ease with and well-spoken on every issue he was asked to address. Ironically, the issue where he impressed me most is one where he may not be in complete alignment with the general attitude of We The People. This regards the 17th Amendment. In simple terms, this amendment means that U.S. Senators are elected by popular vote, whereas previously, they were appointed by their respective State Legislature. Although many in We The People seem to be in favor of a reversal of the 17th Amendment, Widener pointed out that it is the current law he would be required to subject himself to and that it has its pros and cons. One con he pointed out is that, if the 17th Amendment was not in place, our current Democrat-majority State Legislature wouldn’t be very likely to replace Patty Murray.

One point that Widener made that I particularly appreciated, on the topic of “being equipped to do the job”, is that the right candidate needs to be more than technically “equipped”. His observation is that we have a lot of very skilled people in government but, all too often,  we find that they lack virtue. From what I observed, Chris Widener appears to have that quality of virtue. I see him as a solid candidate for U.S. Senate and very deserving of your consideration.

Democrats running scared in California (DOOM!)

One point I initially missed in my previous article on the California Senate race (Cross-posted to RedState), and only later pointed out on Twitter, was that the Democrats should be scared to death about the current polling of Babs Boxer versus the Republicans. Our worst result against her right now gives us a one in four chance to win.

One in four sounds poor, but this is California. Since Pete Wilson retired from the Senate to become Governor, we’ve failed to win a Senate race. We lost two in 92 (Boxer over Herschensohn, Feinstein over Seymour), 94 (Feinstein over Huffington), 98 (Boxer over [Fong, that'll each me for using Wikipedia one lazy evening]), 2000 (Feinstein over Campbell), 04 (Boxer over Jones), and 06 (Feinstein over Mountjoy) for a record of 0 wins and 8 losses since then. The fact that all three of our candidates are polling at least that well against Boxer, with her polling under 50 against anyone (she’d probably graze 50 against me on a good day), should have Democrats panicked that this will be Coakley v. Brown revisited.

It turns out I was right and they are scared. The national left is rushing out here to raise her some money, including the DNC and President Obama himself in April, this after Al Gore helped this month.

Barbara Boxer’s political future is in jeopardy. It’s time Republicans across the country tune in, because the Democrats already started.

Capitol Hill Police Victims of Congressional Arrogance

Okay, they are trying to bully the entire country, so this may not seem like such a big deal in the grand scheme of things. But, it’s a symptom of a much larger problem in the halls of Congress. Plus, it’s still really jerky, Better Than You ™  behavior. It’s also incredibly stupid ; the Hill cops are meant to protect them. From The Hill:

Capitol Hill cops decry bullying staff members

U.S. Capitol Police officers say they need more backing from their leaders to stop congressional staffers who insist on bypassing metal detectors when entering the Capitol with lawmakers.

Several officers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Hill that without a written directive of the policy, they’re left to face bullying staffers and intimidating lawmakers who have been known to file complaints against the officers. The staffers have accused them of discourteous treatment after being stopped and directed to the magnetometers.

Wow. They file complaints against Hill police for doing their jobs because they feel that they are too important and above complying with the rules? I suppose we should be glad that they all don’t physically hit Hill police, like the ever classy Rep. Cynthia McKinney did.

Replacing the Old Guard

Fifteen Republican Senators voted against Jim DeMint’s measure to ban earmarks in the Senate.

Those fifteen were:

  1. Alexander (R-TN)
  2. Bond (R-MO)
  3. Bunning (R-KY)
  4. Cochran (R-MS)
  5. Collins (R-ME)
  6. Gregg (R-NH)
  7. Hutchison (R-TX)
  8. Inhofe (R-OK)
  9. Lugar (R-IN)
  10. Murkowski (R-AK)
  11. Roberts (R-KS)
  12. Shelby (R-AL)
  13. Snowe (R-ME)
  14. Voinovich (R-OH)
  15. Wicker (R-MS)

Senator Bob Bennett, who denounced the measure to a RedState contributor, did not vote at all.

Friends, we can change the Republican Caucus in the United States Senate. But we have to unite behind the real small government conservatives out there. We must get on the same page to improve our own.

Here is the list. We need these guys:

Ken Buck in Colorado
Chuck DeVore in California
Michael Williams in Texas
Marco Rubio in Florida
Rand Paul in Kentucky
Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania
Danny Tarkanian in Nevada
Marlin Stutzman in Indiana
Mike Lee in Utah

And if we can, I say we go with Ovide LaMontagne in New Hampshire and Christine O’Donnell in Delaware. Let’s go all and all in for small government conservatives. This year is our last best chance in a long time to get a slate of solid conservatives.

Rasmussen Polls the California Senate Race

Chart

The California Republican primary race to determine Barbara Boxer’s challenger is getting heated. And while all of us in the state have our biases and preferences, here’s what my cold, hard math says about Rasmussen’s latest poll.

As with last month, the poll again covers all three likely challengers to Barbara Boxer. It shows Fiorina 40/Boxer 46, DeVore 40/Boxer 46, Campbell 41/Boxer 43. All have a Margin of Error of 4.5. Running these numbers through my handy, dandy poll analyzer I get the following winning percentages: Campbell 41%, DeVore 25%, Fiorina 25%.

Citizens Constitutional Congress Formed To Resist White House Takeover Of American Health Care System

CitizensContstitutionalCongress.com is providing “…a powerful new non-partisan voice,” in the wake of The ObamaCare Summit held in Washington last week and the announcement by the White House Wednesday that it is moving ahead to resurrect its highly partisan health care legislation.

Philadelphia, PA (Vocus) March 5, 2010 — As The White House announced its latest initiative pushing “ObamaCare,” a new website, www.CitizensConstitutionalCongress.com today went live to provide Americans with a powerful new voice of resistance to the government’s central planners in Washington, D.C.

Claiming to be “Free Citizens Fighting To Keep America Free,” CitizensContstitutionalCongress.com says it is inspired by the American Committees of Correspondence that, beginning in 1773, enabled American colonists to successfully oppose King George. It’s a proven historic model for a successful popular uprising.

The Tipping Point. CitizensContstitutionalCongress.com is providing “…a powerful new non-partisan voice,” in the wake of The ObamaCare Summit held in Washington last week and the announcement by the White House Wednesday that it is moving ahead to resurrect its highly partisan health care legislation.

“This is a tipping point,” says Lester Jenkins, spokesperson for CitizensConstitutionalCongress.com. Inflexible party officials – the President and his Democrat leaders in Congress (Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid) – have collectively shown themselves to be working tirelessly to promote legislation that violates Americans’ cherished Constitutional freedoms.

“We clearly see what is happening. We oppose the liberal-progressive activists in Washington continuing to dismantle individual freedoms that Americans have fought for, defended, and enjoyed for centuries. We are organizing to oppose them, utilizing modern communications tools such as polls, petitions, conventions. This is an enduring movement to defend our personal liberties – as every generation of Americans has been called to do.”

Early American colonists banded together to form Committees of Correspondence to oppose the encroachment on their individual freedoms by the English Crown. This loose confederation led to The First Continental Congress and the drafting of popular petitions – culminating in The Declaration of Independence – and a successful Revolution against the world’s strongest power. The United States of America was born, establishing the precepts of limited self-government, and guarantees of individual freedom, as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

CitizensContstitutionalCongres.com “opposes ongoing efforts to tax and restrict Americans’ personal liberties through excessive spending and legislative initiatives such as ‘ObamaCare’ and ‘Cap and Trade.’ We strongly urge a return to First Principles as articulated in the United States Constitution. We seek to organize our fellow American citizens in firm resistance with united opposition to the relentless trend among the political class toward socialism.”

The new website proposes to effect change three ways:

1. Online Polling. CitizensConstitutionalCongress.com will regularly conduct public surveys and publish findings (both scientific and inferential) in the American press.
http://citizensconstitutionalcongress.com/wp/polls/

2. Online Petitions & Summons. CitizensConstitutionalCongress.com will draft petitions, solicit signatures, and issue summons and citations to sitting U.S. officials determined, by acclamation of petition signers, to be violating personal liberties as enshrined in the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
http://citizensconstitutionalcongress.com/wp/petitions/

When one million Citizen’s signatures have been secured on any Citizens’ Petitions, CitizensConstitutionalCongress.com will issue Official Summons to be directly delivered by Special Courier to the government official(s) cited.

3. Congressional Conventions. CitizensConstitutionalCongress.com will convene convention delegates (at locations outside of Washington, D.C.) to openly and publicly debate, authorize, and issue proclamations and citations in order to present government officials with the formal summons of the Citizens Constitutional Congress.
http://citizensconstitutionalcongress.com/wp/conferences/

The new website has received endorsements from The Last America Band, whose new release, “The American Freedom Trilogy” features their new video, “How Stupid Do They Think We Are?” The band is directing proceeds from the song to help support CitizensConstitutionalCongress.com. Members of the band are currently touring Ireland and Europe, and will return to the U.S. by the end of the month.

The band was formed by five American recording artists following The ObamaCare Summit and the announcement by the White House Wednesday that it was moving ahead to resurrect its highly partisan ObamaCare legislation.

“Too many have sacrificed too much over too many generations for this generation to fail to defend freedom today,” says Jenkins, speaking on behalf of the band “We won’t let it happen. This is a popular uprising. The resistance is real.”

Entire Senate GOP Send Letter To Reid

Last Wednesday, all 41 Senate’s Republicans signed a letter promising to hold Democrats to the letter of the Senate rules concerning reconciliation. These rules determine what items may be included in a package of alternations to the health bill Democrats intend to shove through Congress violating minority rights in an effort to take over 1/6 of the U.S. economy while simultaneously inserting themselves between you and your doctor.

Will it be enough to scare Democrats in the House? I have my doubts. I believe the GOP must shut down the entire Senate now on all legislation until ObamaCare is moved off the Senate and House calendar and both leaders promise to keep it off the calenders until the next Congress. However, I am hearing from inside sources the Senate GOP is skittish about this approach. Skittish about protecting our liberties? As one strategist put it who has created enough decision trees on the matter to wallpaper a house:

…the only viable strategy I can see is for the Republicans to begin the process of shutting down the U.S. Senate until the Democrats agree to MOVE ON — move off healthcare until the 112th Congress convenes.

I hope the Senate GOP knows what it is doing. I would not put it past VP Biden to overrule the parliamentarian and force this through. I have seen no evidence to the contrary that the entire Democratic party is in self-destruct mode and displaying outward signs of an obsessive-compulsive disorder bordering on seriously neurotic behavior when it comes to ObamaCare.
